Giant Spike Conglomerate
This spectacular stone is a breathtaking beauty,
First shown in situ next to Cluster Two, then in series to answer the most frequently asked question:
"How do we get them out of the ground?"
Giant Spike Conglomerate
First photo shows this large
point in situ, after many buckets of top quality mine run had been
carefully extricated from all around the edges of this incredible specimen. The conglomerate of crystals on the
upper and outer surfaces of the structure anchored it to the wall of
the quartz cavern. The smooth glassy face underneath and along the inside of the point was
cool to the touch, and slick, the dirt did not stick there.
Photo 2: Before removal, the smooth facets of the spike were covered with
a protective foam to prevent any damage during the
extraction process.
Photo 3 - 5: Unearthing any crystal structure that has been
buried in the earth for eons is a slow, careful, painstaking process.
Photo 6: "Dirty" Spike just after removal of protective foam padding.
Photo 7 - 8: Base of Spike shown during cleaning, with close-up of clear crystals in matrix.
Photo 9 - 10: This stone has two large distinct formed terminations, with a third and fourth smaller termination, on a conglomerate matrix. This stunning base has hundreds of smaller
crystals attached, and adds a nice contrast to the
translucent, clear points. Note the flat tabular crystal on
the tip of the shorter termination, and the beautiful white veiling within. This gigantic translucent point
carries light brilliantly.
