LARGE CLUSTER ONE
This
Cluster was the first large quartz conglomerate we identified. We
studied it in situ for several years, the tip of the tallest crystal
rested inches below the ceiling of a gigantic quartz cavern. How to extract the cluster through the narrow
opening of the cave without damage was a challenge. Rather than risk damage, we changed
strategy, and disassembled the ceiling of the quartz cavern to
extract this cluster vertically. The Birdbath
stone on our Home page was a portion of the ceiling of this
crystal cavern, as was the Lighthouse stone.
Upper Left shows Cluster in situ, wrapped in packing foam and
padding, with ropes ready for lifting; quartz arch above cluster is all that remains after former
ceiling of cavern has been removed. Upper Right shows Cluster
dirty, as all stones look immediately after emerging from their
protective layers of earth, lightly brushed, not rinsed. Lower
Left is close-up of dirty stone, no cleaning has been done.
Lower Right shows Cluster after several weeks of rain and water
rinsing, cleaning process beginning.
